Growth Notes

The common thread to each of our paths as we sojourn through this life is people.

I’ve been ruminating in deep gratitude because of the people I have in my life. I am blessed to have family, friends, church members, teammates, and even random-not-so-random strangers, who love me and care about me.

I’ve been going through one of the most difficult times in my life these past 30 days. Not because of 75 HARD. Not because of marathon training. Not because of Ironman training. No.

It’s because scaling a startup is a war of an effort.

Thus, the exact reason I am more deeply appreciative of those within my circle. If someone can stick with you through the most difficult situations, then they are a person to cherish for life.

"Relationships are all there is. Everything in the universe only exists because it is in relationship to everything else. Nothing exists in isolation. We have to stop pretending we are individuals that go at it alone." (Margaret Wheatley)

The business that I joined 2 years ago and have been building, basically, from scratch is forging through a tough time. No need for further details at the moment. They will be shared one day.

Don’t get me wrong, we are crushing it too. As the saying goes, “Business is booming.” Yet, there are always obstacles - and this one is a new one, with a new magnitude, for each of us on the team.

I wouldn’t want it any other way either.

With such a tough moment in time, it makes me think about those who have continually helped me along the way.

Like, my family and my CEO, Nick, helping me as I dropped everything I was doing and moved halfway across the country to join, and build, our startup. I’m blessed to even have the opportunity to say such a statement.

Below is my Instagram post from two years ago. Me with my two suitcases when I moved 2,000 miles from Wayne, New Jersey to Austin, TX within a span of 2 weeks.

The past 2 years has been a mere walking by faith.

Everything is a risk.

This startup was a risk.

Moving was a risk.

Just like the ratio in Newton’s third law of motion: for every action in nature there is an equal and opposite reaction.

Likewise, to achieve highly, you need to have an equal and opposite risk.

But, by the grace of God, we are here.

Not just standing, but standing stronger than ever before.

Thanks to God for protecting me, and my team, through this journey so far.

Why do I share all of this?

As Sam Altman mentions, and as I shared in the last Friday Foursight newsletter, “No one is as honest about how bad the early days are as they should be because it’s so embarrassing in retrospect.”

Building a business is gruelingly tough. Not only do many, who try, fail, but our team is building a trillion dollar company that will be scaled to the masses, and God-willing, benefit generations upon generations upon generations. (James 4:13-16)

At the end of the day, we don’t trulyyy need VC backing. We only need the backing of one: God.

That’s my story for today.

In light of talking about people, I’m also grateful for you. Thank you for reading this. Thank you for being here.

Let us go forth and forge ahead through today’s Friday Foursight.
