The origin of the marathon had an aftermath of immediate death. The event of a marathon was born out of the legend of the Athenian courier Pheidippides, who in 490BC ran from the site of the battle of marathon, to Athens, with the message of Nike (“Victory”). He ran a total distance of 40km. He then collapsed and died.

What a staggering reality.

Even though the story is a legend, it makes me appreciate marathons, and running, so much more.

I spent the past 4 months training for my second-ever marathon.

This past Sunday (on 12/10), I ran that marathon. It was the Monterrey Powerade Marathon in Monterrey, MX.

Even though it was only my second-ever marathon, it was the most scenic, beautiful marathon I’ve ever experienced.

Each highway and each street that I ran had a crisp, golden sunrise that was kissing the grandiose mountains of Monterrey. Talk about a perfect view for running.

I set a goal to run between 3:30 — 3:45.

The race started at 6:45am and I ended up crossing the finish line at 10:28am. That put me at a 3 hour and 43 minutes total run-time.

Even though I didn’t die like Pheidippides, it felt like I was going to at certain points throughout the race.

I must say, it truly is a nice feeling to achieve a goal that I set for myself.

Yet, an even greater feeling than that, is knowing the system of training I had leading up to the race gave me the results I desired.

Oh…. also the tacos I was given, and devoured, after the race induced an impeccable feeling too.

This marathon and its training, reinforced an important framework for me: that with every goal, there needs to be a system. The higher the aim, the more robust the system and habits need to be.

I think of the elite soldier's motto.

It goes as is: “In the thick of battle, you will not rise to the level of your expectations, but fall to the level of your training.”

I am continually impressed by the amount of sponsors at marathons, vendor booths at marathons, and staff that put together all of the logistics to a one-day race event.

It’s definitely a money machine.
