Growth Notes
I went to a convenience store in my New Jersey hometown the other day—a place I know like the back of my hand.
This isn’t just any store; it’s where I spent countless summer days as a teenager. My friends and I would pile in for snacks and cold drinks, a welcome escape from the blistering heat. Those were simple times, filled with goofy fun and carefree moments.
But there was always one constant, one fixture that never changed: the man scratching his scratch-off tickets.
Back then, growing up, I didn’t think much of it. I figured it was just his hobby, something to pass the time. No deeper thoughts crossed my mind. I was young, distracted by laughter and the chaos of youth—my friends and I were too busy living our own story to care.
But here’s the thing.
The other day, stepping back into that same store years later, there he was again. Same place. Same routine. Head down, coin in hand, eyes glued to that little piece of paper, scratching away with quiet determination.
And it hit me: this man has been coming here every single day. Without fail. Every. Single. Day.
Think about that for a second—how much time, how much money he’s poured into this place, into those tickets.
As I checked out, curiosity got the better of me. I turned to the cashier and said, “Listen, I grew up here for nearly two decades. That guy’s always been around. Has he ever won big? Is he a millionaire yet?”
The cashier chuckled, then his face turned serious. He leaned in close and said, “He’s here all the time. The most he’s ever won is $100.”
I was floored. But at the same time… I wasn’t.
I thanked the cashier, grabbed my stuff, and headed for the door. Before leaving, I stole one last glance at the man—still scratching, still lost in his ritual—and then I stepped outside.
That’s when it hit me. I thought to myself, “If only he knew! If only he realized the greatest lottery in the world is right there, within his reach—at any moment! It’s between his two ears, behind his two eyeballs. As Earl Nightingale once put it, he’s sitting on ‘acres of diamonds of potential’—his mind. It’s all there, untapped, waiting.”
But I know he’ll never see it. He’s in too deep, chained to that place and those tickets.
Only a few will ever grasp this truth.
Still, I’m grateful for him. This man, without ever knowing it, has shaped me more than he could imagine. He’s a quiet lesson, a living reminder.
I thank God for that—for the experience, and for him being part of my story.
God bless,
Anthony

I truly believe this is the greatest YouTube video of all time.
I listen to it like a kid who clings to candy. Week after week. Day after day.
